Quick Answer
We supply, install and service Steel-Line garage door openers across Perth, from West Perth out to every suburb north and south of the river. That covers a new Steel-Line motor for a sectional or roller door, and repairs to the Steel-Line units already on Perth doors: remotes the motor no longer answers, safety beams that will not line up, and motors that hum without moving the door. The quote costs nothing, we charge no call-out fee, and you have the price before we start; same-day service is available.
Steel-Line openers in Perth: new units, and the ones already on your door
Steel-Line makes openers to go with its doors, and the range splits the same way the doors do. A sectional door takes a rail-drive unit hung from the ceiling; a roller door takes a compact motor on the drum axle at the side of the curtain. Both come with a pair of remotes, and the current units add the things people now ask for: a wall button, a wireless keypad by the door, battery backup so the door still opens in a blackout, and WiFi or app control on some models so you can check the door is shut from your phone. Model names and features change from year to year, so rather than list them here we confirm what is current and match a unit to your door on the day. A Steel-Line motor will also drive most standard sectional and roller doors from other makers, so it does not need a Steel-Line door under it. You can browse the opener range before we come out; the doors themselves are covered on the Steel-Line door range page.
A fair share of the people who land here are not buying anything. Steel-Line doors went onto a lot of Perth homes in the estates that grew around Ellenbrook, Canning Vale and Joondalup twenty-odd years ago, and the openers fitted with them are now old enough to misbehave: a remote the motor ignores, a unit that runs while the door stays put, a beam that trips every afternoon when the western sun gets onto it, or a motor that has gone silent altogether. We repair and service existing Steel-Line openers as well as fit new ones. When the fault is a remote, a beam set, a globe, a drive gear or a limit that has drifted, it is usually put right on the spot from parts carried on the van. When the circuit board or the motor itself has failed on an old unit, we give you the price of a like-for-like Steel-Line replacement next to the price of the repair, and the decision is yours.
On a new install we check the door before we touch the opener, because a motor bolted to a door that is heavy on its springs works hard from its first cycle and wears out early. Then the old unit comes down, the new Steel-Line motor or rail goes up, the travel limits and force are set so the door stops and reverses when it meets something, the safety beams go in low across the opening, and the remotes, wall button and any app are paired. On a repair we start at the symptom and work back to the cause, and you get a price before any part goes on. Either way you watch the door run, you are shown the manual release, and the same people answer the phone if a remote drops out later on.

Frequently Asked Questions
On most Steel-Line openers there is a learn or code button on the motor head, sometimes under the light cover. Press it once so the indicator comes on, then within a few seconds press the button on the remote you want to use; the indicator changes or the light flashes to confirm, and the door should respond to that button straight after. The exact steps and the button's name vary between models and between older and current units, so check the label on the motor and the manual for yours before you start. We have written a step-by-step Steel-Line remote programming guide that walks through it. If the motor will not take the code, the remote may be the wrong type for the receiver or the unit may be full and need clearing, and we can sort both on site.
Steel-Line is an Australian garage door manufacturer that also makes openers designed for its own doors, and on the opener side that is a reasonable place to start. The current units carry what you would expect on a modern residential motor: soft start and stop, an auto-reverse that backs the door off an obstruction, a manual release for power cuts, and remotes, keypads and app control as options on some models. How well any opener performs over the years has more to do with the door under it than the badge on it. A motor on a balanced door with clean tracks does light work every cycle; one dragging a door with tired springs wears its gear out early, whoever made it. We supply, install and service Steel-Line openers and are happy fitting them, and we set the door up properly first.
We price it after seeing the door, because the figure depends on what has actually failed. On the repair side, a new remote, a beam set or a globe is a small job; a drive gear is more work; a circuit board on an older unit can cost enough that a new opener is the better buy, and we will tell you when that is the case. On the replacement side, the model sets the price: a roller-door motor with two remotes sits below a sectional rail drive with battery backup and app control, and a heavy double or insulated door needs a stronger unit again. Taking the old motor away, awkward access and a missing power point near the opener all move the figure. There is no charge for the quote or the call-out, and nothing starts until you have agreed the figure.
Often, yes. If the door is straight, the springs are carrying its weight and the tracks or guides are in good order, a new opener goes onto the existing door and nothing else needs touching. The new unit has to be the right type, a rail drive for a sectional door or an axle motor for a roller door, and it has to be sized for the door's weight. We check the balance first, because an opener on a door that is heavy on its springs is both unsafe and short-lived, and if the door is the real problem we would rather fix that than sell you a motor to fight it. Sometimes the answer is smaller still: on a sound Steel-Line unit a failed board, drive gear or receiver can be replaced on its own and the rest of the motor kept.
We would advise against it. Changing the battery in a remote, coding a new handset or wiping down the safety beams is fine to do yourself. The rest is not a driveway job: the opener runs off mains power, the door's springs stay under load the whole time it is disconnected, the unit is mounted overhead from a ladder and has to be lined up with the door's travel, and the force, limits and safety beams have to be set so the door reverses off a person or a car. A limit set a touch too far or a beam wired wrong is how a door hurts someone or tears itself off its brackets. We do it, test it in front of you and hand it over working.
No. A remote has to match the receiver in the motor, both the frequency it transmits on and the coding the receiver expects, so a handset from another brand or an older Steel-Line series will usually not take. Some universal remotes can be made to work with some Steel-Line units, but it is hit and miss and we do not rely on them. People ask whether hardware stores stock Steel-Line remotes; what a retailer carries changes and we cannot speak for it, so the safe route is to match the handset to the model on your motor, such as the remote used with the SD800 and SD1200 openers. We can supply a compatible Steel-Line remote and code it to your opener on site.
On the day, a repair that turns out to be a remote, a beam set, a globe or a limit adjustment is a short visit and is done while we are there. A like-for-like swap, old Steel-Line motor down and a new one up on the same door, is usually a few hours including the beams, the remotes and the safety test. It takes longer when a manual door is being automated for the first time, because there is no rail, wiring or power point to reuse, and longer again if the door needs springs or rollers before an opener should go on it or if an electrician has to add a power point near the motor. We tell you at the quote which of those applies to your door.
