Quick Answer
We repair garage door openers and motors of any brand across Perth: units that will not respond, run without moving the door, stop part-way or grind through the cycle. The fault is diagnosed on site before a part is named: a worn drive gear, a circuit board, a capacitor or a setting that has drifted. There is no call-out fee, you get the price before the repair starts, and common parts travel on the van, so common opener faults are fixed in one visit.
Garage door opener repair in Perth: what fails
The call usually starts the same way. The remote is pressed and nothing happens; or the motor hums and the door stays where it is; or the door sets off, stops a metre up and sits there for no reason anyone can see. Sometimes it opens fine and refuses to close, or closes most of the way and bounces back open. In Perth homes the opener is the part nobody thinks about until it fails, usually on a weekday morning with the car behind the door. We repair garage door openers and motors across Perth, north and south of the river, whatever brand is fitted and whether it drives a roller, sectional or tilt door.
Inside the head unit there is not a lot to go wrong, but what does go wrong is predictable. Chain and belt drives wear the drive gear until it strips, which is the classic motor-runs-door-stays-put fault. Roller-door motors can wear their drive coupling or clutch. Circuit boards and start capacitors give out, and a garage that bakes through a Perth summer is hard on both. Force and travel limits drift, so a door that was fine last winter now stops short or reverses. And plenty of the openers fitted when Ellenbrook, Canning Vale and Joondalup went up in the 1990s and 2000s are simply old. Where a part is needed we fit it from our opener spare parts and accessories range or order it for your model.
Repairing makes sense when one part has failed on a unit that is otherwise sound and still has parts and compatible remotes available: a gear, a capacitor, a board, a drifted setting. It stops making sense when the model is obsolete and the board cannot be had, when the motor has burnt out, or when the repair would cost a big share of a new unit. We repair most makes, including Merlin, B&D, ATA, Gliderol, Centurion, Grifco and others, and we supply, install and service Merlin, Jaytech, Superlift and Steel-Line openers. If yours is past saving we say so on the day; supplying and fitting a new garage door opener is covered on its own page.

How Our Repair Process Works
Tell us what it's doing
Nothing at all, a hum, a start-and-stop or a grind each points somewhere different. A short video or photo helps.
Repair or replace, honestly
Before anything else we weigh the age of the unit, whether parts are still made for it and the likely fault, and tell you straight which way it leans.
Diagnose on site
We test the opener, the door's balance, the sensors and the remotes, because a heavy door can look exactly like a dead motor.
Repair, priced first
You hear the figure and agree it before we start. Common parts come off the van; a model-specific board may have to be ordered, and we tell you that on the day.
Test and handover
Force, limits and safety reverse set and tested, remotes checked, and we show you the manual release before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on what has failed, so we look first and quote on the spot rather than guess over the phone. The cheapest outcome is no part at all: a force or travel limit that has drifted, a remote that needs re-coding, or a door that has gone heavy and needs its springs looked at rather than the motor touched. Next come wearing parts such as a drive gear, a belt or a capacitor. A circuit board costs more again, and how much depends on the brand and age of the unit. If the fault is beyond repairing we quote a new opener alongside so you can compare. The quote is free, there is no call-out fee, and you agree the figure before we start.
Usually, when one part has failed on a unit whose motor is sound and whose parts and compatible remotes are still available. A stripped gear, a tired capacitor or a drifted setting is a repair, not a reason to replace. It stops being worth it when the board is dead and no longer made, when the motor has burnt out, when several parts are going at once, or when the repair price would be a big slice of a new unit. We tell you which side of that line your opener sits on before any work starts, and if it is the wrong side we quote a new one so you can weigh both figures.
Across the whole door, the most common problem is a spring, and a tired spring often gets blamed on the opener because the motor is what refuses to lift the weight. On the opener itself, the usual faults are a stripped drive gear on chain and belt units, flat remote batteries or a lost code, safety sensors knocked out of line or blinded by afternoon sun, force and limit settings that have drifted, and circuit boards and capacitors that give out with age and heat. Several of these are settings rather than parts; the reset steps to try first are in our guide, and if they do not fix it, ring us.
Some of it, carefully; most of it, no. Changing remote batteries, cleaning the sensor lenses and following the maker's reset procedure for your model are fine, with the door watched and nobody standing under it. Beyond that the risks stack up. The head unit runs off mains power, and anything to do with the power point or the fixed wiring is an electrician's job. The door is held by springs under heavy tension, and a door with a failed spring will drop if the manual release is pulled. Board and gear work means opening the unit and usually re-setting the force afterwards, and a force set too high will not reverse on a person or a car. It is a job for someone who does it every day.
There is no fixed number. Ten to fifteen years of normal use is a fair working expectation, but a well-balanced door on a serviced opener can go longer, and an opener that has spent years hauling a door with tired springs will not get there. Age alone is not a reason to replace; the state of the motor and whether parts are still made for it are what count.
Yes. The unit already on your ceiling is what we work on, whatever the badge: Merlin, B&D, ATA, Gliderol, Centurion, Grifco, Chamberlain and the older or unbranded units that came with many estate homes. We supply, install and service Merlin, Jaytech, Superlift and Steel-Line openers; for other makes we repair what is there. If a part is no longer made for your model, we say so rather than guess, and lay out the options.
Most opener repairs are done in one visit. A limit or force reset, re-pairing remotes or a capacitor swap is quick once the fault is found; a drive gear or a circuit board takes longer, and the diagnosis itself, which includes checking the door's balance and the sensors, is part of the time. If a board has to be ordered for your model, we tell you on the day, show you the manual release so the door can be used by hand, and come back to fit it.
